Sardinian Life Sardinia really is a jewel in the Mediterranean. The
coastline is pristine with none of the over-exploitation visible on so
many Mediterranean beach locations. The silky sandy beaches of the
south, so favoured by mainland Italians are just being discovered by
other Europeans. |

Sardinia has a wonderful climate, a rich culture, wide
open spaces both on the beaches and on the beautiful mountains which can
be viewed from every spot on the island. The islanders were
traditionally mountain folk, and much of the culture of the early
Nouraghic people is visible on almost every hilltop. Many festivals
celebrate this early culture. Men with cloaks of traditional bells on
their backs, more normally seen on Sardinian sheep, dancing in their
costumes reminiscent of a wild version of English Morrismen!
As you would expect in Italy you will
find a warm welcome, great food, including many local specialities from
the famous Sardinian suckling pig, to great fish dishes like Carloforte
Tuna, the best in Italy, and sweets such as Torrone, real nougat
with honey and nuts. Also Padulas, the

local cakes made with ricotta cheese
and saffron, a Sardinia speciality. Sardinia also produces excellent
wines such as Cannonau (Red) and Vermentino (White), which can start
from as little as €1 a litre.
The beaches must be some of the most beautiful in
Europe but there is much more to Sardinia with Roman ruins, Nouraghic
settlements, stunning mountains. Everywhere you go in Sardinia you will
find a beautiful view! |
